For Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) offers support to live a fuller life. If English isn’t your first language, free interpreting services make accessing the NDIS easier. Here’s how you can get help with language support on the Coffs Coast.
Free Language Support And Interpreting Services
The NDIS partners with Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) to provide free interpreters in over 160 languages. These services help you talk to NDIS providers, planners, or support coordinators. You won’t pay for interpreters when using NDIS-registered providers. Call TIS National on 131 450 for immediate phone interpreting, available 24/7, or ask your provider to book a face-to-face interpreter. Bookings can be made up to 90 days in advance, so plan early to secure your preferred language or interpreter. The interpreters’ role is to interpret spoken words only. This means they are unable to give you advice about the NDIS.
How to Access Language Support
Your NDIS provider or support coordinator can arrange interpreters for meetings or calls. Tell them your preferred language, and they’ll use TIS National to book a certified interpreter with an NDIS Worker Screening Check. If you need a specific interpreter or gender, let your provider know. For Northern Territory Aboriginal languages, the NDIS works with Aboriginal Interpreting Services (AIS) for registered providers. Contact the NDIA on 1800 800 110 for translated resources or more details.
Why It Matters
Language support ensures you understand your NDIS plan and get the right services. Whether it’s discussing goals or using supports, interpreters make communication clear and stress-free.
