So, what is diversity? Diversity is about what makes each of us unique and includes our backgrounds, personality, life experiences and beliefs, all of the things that make us who we are. It is a combination of our differences that create our view of the world, our perspective and our approach. In other words, it’s not just about flags and food.
Harmony Day – A Day to Connect
This special day builds bridges. Take Sarah, a teacher in Melbourne. Sarah gets her class to swap family recipes. The kids end up with a fantastic and eclectic mix of foods like tasty curries beside lamingtons. It’s chaotic and fun and brings cultures together.

Throughout the day, and across Australia, individuals share authentic accounts of their experiences settling in Australia. For instance, Ravi, a small business owner in Sydney, relocated from India ten years ago and currently operates a café where he fuses chai with Australian coffee. On Harmony Day, he organises a storytelling evening, where patrons share narratives about their origins.
Workplaces Get Involved in Harmony Day
Workplaces bring Harmony Day alive too. Lisa manages a team in Brisbane. Last year, she set up a “Wear Your Culture” day. Consequently, one guy rocked a kilt, another a dashiki. Moreover, they laughed, snapped pictures, and learned a bit about each other. For 2025, she’s planning a lunchtime talk about staff sharing what harmony means to them.
Kids Lead the Way
Also, schools get into it big time. Activities include workshops, seminars, and fun sessions focused around multiculturalism. For example, Mia, a 10-year-old in Perth, painted a mural with her mates last time. It featured bright colours, flags, and hands linking up. She says it’s her favourite day because “everyone special gets a spotlight”.
Harmony Week in Coffs Harbour
Harmony Week in Coffs is celebrated throughout the region between March 17 and 23. It culminates with a larger event on Harmony Day, the 21st, with the Harmony Festival at the Botanic Gardens.
