World Day for Cultural Diversity: Deepen Your Understanding

World Day for Cultural Diversity: Deepen Your Understanding

May 21st is a special global celebration of our world’s incredible cultural diversity. Started in 2002, World Day for Cultural Diversity has quickly become a worldwide event. Its aim is to bring diverse people closer together and to bridge cultural divides. So, what is diversity anyway?

What Really is Cultural Diversity?

So, what pops into your mind when you hear “diversity”? Maybe it’s things like race, age, or gender. Yes, those are part of it. But cultural diversity goes deeper. It’s about recognising the underlying differences such as beliefs, skills, language, and relationships. Consequently, to grasp true diversity, we need to sharpen our cultural intelligence.

Developing Cultural Intelligence

Understanding each other’s cultural roots is more crucial than ever, especially at work. Cultural intelligence means going beyond knowing basic facts about another culture. It’s more about getting to know the values, feelings and drivers that folks from different cultures have. Once you have this, you can develop a deeper understanding and connection. So, ask thoughtful questions and pay attention, you might be surprised at the differences and really enjoy the learning process at the same time.

The United Nations on Diversity

According to the UN’s website:

“Three-quarters of the world’s major conflicts have a cultural dimension. Bridging the gap between cultures is urgent and necessary for peace, stability and development.

Diversity is a driving force of development, not only with respect to economic growth, but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual life. This is captured in the cultural conventions, which provide a solid basis for the promotion of cultural diversity. Diversity is thus an asset that is indispensable for poverty reduction and the achievement of sustainable development”.
